Powering Bradford’s low carbon future
Bradford Low Carbon Hydrogen is a flagship production facility, delivered in partnership with N-Gen Energy Solutions, that will generate clean, low carbon hydrogen to fuel heavy transport and industry across the region.
Located at the historic Birkshall Gas site off Bowling Back Lane, the project is transforming a landmark of Bradford’s energy heritage into a hub for the future. From 2027, the facility will produce up to 12.5 tonnes of hydrogen per day using renewable electricity to power a 35MW alkaline electrolyser.
The hydrogen will be available at an on-site refuelling station or delivered directly to local businesses—helping to replace diesel and natural gas, cut emissions, and improve air quality.
As the largest project to secure funding through the UK Government’s first Hydrogen Allocation Round, Bradford Low Carbon Hydrogen is a model for the UK’s clean energy transition, supporting Bradford’s ambition to be a net zero city by 2038.
Project Benefits
- 12.5 tonnes of low carbon hydrogen produced daily
- 800 buses could run on the hydrogen produced
- £120 million estimated value to the local economy
- Up to 125 jobs created during construction and operation
- #1 largest hydrogen production scheme to receive HAR1 funding
