Tyseley Hydrogen Hub

Capacity: 3.5MW
Operational since 2020
Mobility & Mobile refuelling
HAR2 expansion – 10MW

Leading the way in reliable hydrogen supply

Tyseley is one of the UK’s largest and longest-operating electrolyser sites, having been operational since 2020. Because of this, it has become a proven model for reliable hydrogen production and dispensing.

Hygen Energy owns and operates the production facility, focusing on efficiency, reliability and ensuring that hydrogen can be produced and supplied at a competitive price, and at scale.

Charles Portwain, Chief Financial Officer at Hygen Energy states: ‘’Real-world deployment is the key to unlocking hydrogen’s potential and Tyseley is proving what’s possible.”

On a practical level, the cutting-edge site has a 3.5MWe electrolysis capacity, capable of producing up to 800kg of hydrogen per day. That’s enough to fuel over 50 buses. It also has onsite 350 and 700 bar dispensing for hydrogen vehicles, alongside a tube trailer filling facility.

Building on Tyseley’s proven credentials and dependable production, Hygen has established hydrogen supply agreements with a range of customers across public transport, construction and mobility. These partnerships demonstrate the site’s ability to deliver reliable, low carbon hydrogen at scale to meet real-world demand.

Looking ahead, Tyseley is set to scale further. The site has been shortlisted in the UK Government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 2 (HAR2) for expansion through the Tyseley Low Carbon Hydrogen Project. This would see an additional 10MW of electrolyser capacity deployed at the existing facility, significantly increasing supply for the region and supporting the decarbonisation of transport and construction — a major step towards a national low carbon hydrogen network.
